Explore how drums and rhythm can be used to add a fun, exciting, effective and lively dimension to your group work. Acquire the skills necessary to deliver a
thoughtful, informed therapeutic or learning experience.

No Drumming or musical experience is required

Course Outline:

Interactive drum circle
The group will participate in a fully facilitated drum circle.
Drum circle how-to
The participants will be taught the principles and techniques of drum circle facilitation and they will be given ample opportunity to apply and practice these principles and techniques
Tools of the trade
They will be introduced to the basic equipment that is necessary to set-up and manage a drum circle or rhythmic activity and they will be taught how to effectively and safely use the equipment
Drums and rhythm 101
This section will focus on drumming technique and learning some of the many rhythms and rhythmic combinations that can be used in therapeutic group activities.
Equipment selection and care
Proper selection and care of equipment is an important topic that is often overlooked.  I will discuss the methods that I use to select the best equipment
and give tips on proper maintenance.
Drums and rhythm in a therapeutic setting
Applying and adapting the basic principles, techniques and skills so that they can be used effectively to create powerful drum and rhythmic activities for different populations and in varying therapeutic settings.

Course Presenter;

Bevil Spence is the founder and chief facilitator of The Drumba Project
He has 25 years of experience as a drum circle facilitator, hand-drumming teacher, drum and instrument maker. He has presented facilitator training programs for, educators and healthcare professionals at:

To share the many benefits or drumming and rhythmic activity.
To explore use of rhythm, drums and
percussion as a tool in the therapeutic and education process.
To encourage and support scientific investigation into the benefits of drums and
rhythm.
